You can scroll through anything you see on screen with a touch or with your voice. Most changes and updates hit all of Google Assistant's smart displays in relatively short order, though expectedly, they come to the Nest Hub first. All of these features are the same on all of the Google Assistant-equipped smart displays, and my favorite feature of both the Lenovo Smart Display and the JBL Link View has made its way intact to the Google Nest Hub. The original Google Home model is a cylindrical speaker that is 5.62 inches tall and 3.79 inches in diameter. The top surface of the device features colored status LEDs, and features capacitive touch controls to start and stop music, and adjust volume. A mute button is located on the back of the device, which disables the microphones. The Google Home Hub sports a 7-inch touchscreen attached to a fabric-covered base similar to the Google Home. It comes with a built-in Google Assistant, Bluetooth 5.0 for connectivity, and an ambient EQ light sensor that deals with the ambient light to adjust the brightness automatically.
Google Assistant will read the ingredients and directions out loud and you can see them listed on the screen. Unlike most of the other smart displays, the Nest Hub doesn't have a camera, which might be a negative for some, but privacy-minded folks will appreciate its absence. Otherwise, it offers all the same features as the other smart displays for a reasonable price. The Google Nest Hub is a cute, useful gadget, and an even better value now than it was when it debuted.
An entertainment hub
In May 2017, Google announced that Home would be heading to Australia, Canada, France, Germany, and Japan in middle 2017, and the device subsequently became available for pre-order in Canada on June 2, 2017, with a retail date of June 26. In July 2017, Google announced the release of Google Home in Australia on July 20, 2017, France on August 3, 2017, Germany on August 8, 2017, and Italy on March 27, 2018. Oh, and definitely don't think about it as an Android tablet with a smart speaker attached. The company's smart display platform doesn't allow for apps to be installed or any such thing. So you'll be able to talk to it like you would to a Google Home, but unlike smart speakers, on such a smart display the Assistant will obviously also be able to show you things.
It might, for instance, offer to assist in setting up a smart home routine that dims your lighting and plays relaxing sounds to help you wind down. Thanks to the Nest Hub's built-in microphones, it can also detect coughing and snoring, and that audio is processed on the device, not sent to Google's servers. Additional sensors allow the Hub to detect light and temperature changes in the room to offer insights about how those factors affect your shut eye. The Hub comes in chalk , charcoal , mist , or sand , colors that match the new Nest Thermostat. Nest sent me the mist version, and I love how it looks on my bedside table, especially with Google's curated image library set as the screen saver. You can also set it to cycle through your own images stored in Google Photos, or display the time in full-screen mode with your choice of clock faces.
Item specifics
When enabled, the Soli motion sensor basically creates an invisible, contactless tracking bubble around the person sleeping closest to the device. It can detect movements large and small—such as when you get up to use the bathroom, take a sip of water, roll over, or even breathe—all without a camera or requiring you to wear a separate device to bed. When Sleep Sensing is active, you'll see a little bed icon in the top right corner of the display. In terms of aesthetics, the second-gen Nest Hub offers a few small upgrades compared with its predecessor, including a new edgeless display and a slightly more compact 4.7-by-7.0-by-2.7-inch design. It retains the original's lovely 7-inch, 1,024-by-600 touch screen and 5.4-by-2.4-inch oval base.
With the ability to track your sleep in addition to all of the voice control capacity of the original, the second-generation Nest Hub smart display is an ideal bedside companion for Google Assistant users. The other smart displays we've tested can also automatically adjust their brightness based on ambient light to an extent, but the Nest Hub is much better at it as it also makes adjustments based on color temperature. All Google Assistant smart displays make similar use of the touchscreen. Users can connect and group together multiple Home speakers for synchronized playback of music in every room. A notable feature omission, multiple accounts, was criticized by JR Raphael of Computerworld in November 2016, but an update for users in the United States in April 2017 enabled the feature.
It's a 7-inch smart display, preparing to enter a nascent market already populated by the Lenovo Smart Display and the JBL Link View. The Google Home branding isn't a mistake - think of this basically as a smart speaker with a display slapped onto it. At $99.99, the second-gen Nest Hub is debuting at a lower price than its predecessor, which arrived in 2018 as the $149 Home Hub. Google later renamed that model the Nest Hub, and last year lowered its price to $89.99. It also offers the $229 Nest Hub Max, which features a 10-inch touch screen, a webcam for video calls and home monitoring, and stronger audio, but no sleep tracking abilities.
Change the temp of your thermostat, and you'll see buttons and sliders to tweak the temp further or change the mode. It has two forward-facing microphones on a bezel surrounding the 7-inch screen. The middle dot between the mics is an ambient light sensor, not a camera. On the back of the Nest Hub you'll find a switch that mutes the microphone and buttons for controlling the volume, and that's it. If you want to do anything else with the Nest Hub, you'll need to use its touchscreen or give it a voice command. The Google Nest Hub's touchscreen is responsive and works well in combination with Google Assistant, whether you ask for help on a recipe or check what's on your calendar.
It also keeps track of your cough count, minutes spent snoring, and respiration rate for the following night and over the past week. The new Nest Hub can fill a small room with audio, but it doesn't sound better than a similarly priced dedicated Bluetooth speaker. When blasting The Knife's "Silent Shout" at full volume, the drivers distort a bit on the bass hits at the beginning of the song. The highs sound good, but the bass is unfulfilling, especially compared with listening to the same track on the Echo Show 8.

Additionally, if you sleep with someone else, it might attribute their coughing and/or snoring to you. A Google spokesperson acknowledged that the device might accidentally pick up noise caused by co-sleepers, but said the company is actively working on improvements to prevent that from happening. A smart home control center
"Proactive Assistance" enables the device to dictate updates to users without being asked, including updates on traffic before a scheduled event. "Visual Responses" let users send answers from Google Home onto their mobile device or Chromecast-enabled television. The device now also supports Bluetooth audio streaming through compatible devices , and the ability to schedule calendar appointments, with upcoming support for reminders. Various forms of both in-house and third-party services are integrated into Google Home, allowing users to speak voice commands to control interaction with them. These smart displays, more so than tablets or smartphones, are really only as valuable as the virtual assistants they host. But for some consumers, especially those who get creeped out whenever they're reminded how much Google knows about them, the Home Hub may be too smart.
